Textual Analysis: Eastenders
Introduction
In the 5min sequence that was presented Eastenders has shown representations of real life in the east end. In the 5min sequence you identify conflict in every corner of the sequence from friends fighting to family. However there are parts of the sequence where you find that family and friends are valued highly and that there is a care and protective attitude towards different characters. Due to the fact that most of the scenes settings are in a pub or house shows that there the community are close and there is a type of unity which brings a positive impression of the east end to a certain extent. Class in this drama can be represented in many ways the colloquialism, cloths and job can all identify the class of a character.

Scene 1
In the first scene it shows two characters which are sisters having a conversation the settings of this scene is set on the local street where you can spot patches of graffiti which shows a negative impression of the east end. In the scene u can hear diegetic sounds of the local market and the people in this scene the shots that they used in this scene are mid-shots of the characters to show there casual clothing and expresses to us that there from a working background. Furthermore what evidently concluded to us thinking that they are the working class is when one on the characters use colloquialism ‘sweet’. When describing the settings the lighting is rather doe and gloomy which suggests a gritty east end.

Scene 2
In the second scene it shows to characters in a two shot that suggests to the audience that they are on the same side. We also know this because of what is said in the conversation which was advice from a character to another which also expresses unity and guidance and shows the character as a strong protective figure. However when the other character is left alone he then feels venerable and senseless in this scene the east end is represented as a tough scamy part of London. The character is left to be cheated and mistreated by the customers however shows weakness and isolation form the character. The setting of this scene is an old fashioned pub with many people that know everyone which brings that sense of unity and friendship friends and family. On the other hand in general this scene is a negative impression on the east end. The camera shots that have been used in this scene as mentioned before the two-shot which suggests unity. Another was the close up shot which was used on the venerable character which helped us see the worry and anxiety on the characters face. If you look closely at the female characters costume its very posh and old fashioned which could show the impression that she many be from the lower middle class of the ladder. However it is not enough to suggest to us that she is educated but does show that she has a much high status then the rest of the characters shown in the scene.

Scene 3
In this scene is shows two characters in a low angle shot this shot indicates that the male character is a protective figure to the female character. This then tells us that the value of family is very important and is treasured. The male seems to be looking out for the female and advising her that what ever she is doing would take a lot of work however the female seems to have everything planned out and is excited. Another shot shown in this scene is the point of view shot which was done to show the audience that the character is remembering what she was like when she was younger and that to express he is terribly afraid and worried what could happen to her. This again emphasises the love and care for family the setting of the seen is in a house that looks dark and wounded which could suggest the feelings of the characters living in the house. Which again is a negative impression an expresses further conflict? The dialogue used in this scene was very shaky and expressed to us that she needed help and was troubled.

Scene 4
In the start of this scene the representation of the community if a glorious one firstly its shows a group of characters excited about the prospect of a new born child which again could show renewed peace and comfort. Furthermore there are different ethnicities working together and making a successful business which expresses a positive impression. We no there are working from the costumes they have on the shot they use for this is an establishing shot to show all characters facial expressions. However after that part of the scene the tone and the happy atmosphere begins to diminish the female character walks in and destroys the mood. Many shots are taken in this scene and one is the close up shot this shot is marked onto a particular character numerous times which then suggests he is behind the trouble approaching .this shot shows the worry and fear of this character very effectively and immediately conveys to the audience that he is in the middle. The dialogue used in this scene is very aggressive and is done with so much passion and emotion however brings a negative impression that there is that lack of honesty and trust between family and friends. However just before the scene is finished it brings back the emotion and love that the characters have for one another. What this shows about the community is that there is care and unity however there is also lack of trust and faith in one another. The settings are in a kitchen which again shows that working class status. Another shot that was used was the shot reverse shot to show that there is a dispute between to sides which unfortunately has one character in a cross fire. During this shot it shows a lot of aggression and rage between family and friends

Conclusion
To conclude the representation of the community is that there is a respect and care for one another and that they are very close together. The type of jobs that are presented in the drama are people working in the market which expresses the working class also the surroundings which are very rough and gritty suggest that the community are predominantly working class. It would be hard to find someone in a suit most of the people are in casual wear which tells us most have no university status.

Analysis of Skins Posters

Character In this skins poster there are many characters that are included however the poster has centred one individual which is quiet evident. The character that has been centred and divided from the rest of the poster can be judged straight away from her appearance what immediately comes to mind when seeing this character is filth and shame. You could also identify that she is more or less alone, lost in a place she cannot come out of which could also bring sympathy for this character. An if you look closely you can she her facial expression almost like a call for help nevertheless her make up is terrible and her hair is in worrying condition and all these symptoms depicted this character as being a teenager that is immature, senseless and sad. If u also look strictly at her body she looks unclean unkempt which emphasises that she is a teenager who don’t really care what type of state she is in. However from her facial expression (sad, unhappy) there is more to this character then meets the naked eye you could almost feel anxiety from her.

Addition props As you can see from the skins poster every character is half naked or naked this is done to express most teenage characters. The way the poster has centred this character in this poster almost gives you the idea that she is the sent of attention to most of the teenagers around her. You can see dirty sweaty bodies that give you the impression of teenagers having sex which help the audience identify what type of programme skins is.

Settings The poster shows these characters in a rotted house which was probably done to convey that these characters are tremendously filthy and have no respect for themselves. The clothing also brings that impression but having the rotted house convinces the viewers completely. The rotted house conveys a lot it states that the teenagers are not in an environment were there are parents or officials to stop there dreadful behaviour which means the likely things to take place would be drugs, sex and drinking. Not all teenagers would be expressed like this however the way the teenagers are depicted in the skins poster what else would they be involved in?

Interior design In this particular skins poster the design is made to make us the audience feel disgusted and appalled. In the image you can see that the house has been torn apart the wallpaper has been destroyed and it looks very cramped up. The design of the room is rather devilish but doll due to the fact of the lighting. Everything looks in disarray which conveys that the teenagers have been up to senseless activity however if you look deeply the only thing that looks in order is the lamb which could be significant. The state of which the house is in could bring the message that the house doesn’t belong to anyone and if it does belong to someone that someone that is ill and needs serious help.

Colour In this skins poster the colour is very effect because it creates the mood and atmosphere of the poster. An in the poster the colour is rather dark and demise this creates a doll miserable mood and the atmosphere can be seen as less exciting then you would think its more like a sad isolated atmosphere. The wallpaper brings that sense of sadness and worry.

Lightings In this skins poster the lighting that is used I believe is natural the light is coming from one part of the room where the lamb is placed and the further away you are the darker it is. The lighting towards the main character is low key and the poster makes us look toward the main character because the dark side and the light side the character is in between. The lighting used also brings a sense of sadness and worry and the character herself helps us believe this sense of sadness. The lighting also brings a scary eerie mood tone and atmosphere.

Conclusion Ultimately in this particular skins poster teenagers are represented as being unreasonable irresponsible and senseless which in my opinion I believe is wrong. However due to the fact that the main character in the poster looks sad it could also mean that in this modern day when you find you self involved it is very hard to escape .I believe that it is a realistic portrayal of certain teenagers those that do drugs have unreasonable amounts of alcohol, sex and isolated from everyone else. However there are many teenagers that are far from the same road as teenagers that are depicted in this poster like myself and many others. This poster is very distant from being false and is quiet believable indeed. Certainly this is a negative representation of teenagers showing the ill sided part of teenage hood like the drinking and sex.

In my opinion I believe that most adults would deny that all teenagers I like this but would be certainly aware that we do have teenagers that behave in this manner. Some parents would use this as a foundation to try stop things like this happening in reality trying to found a better path for young teens. However there are adults that would think that the poster shows exactly what ALL teenagers do when not being watched by elders and that more posters should be published to help elders to become more aware and vigilant with their children.

In my outlook I wouldn’t seen a reason why teenagers should find the images offensive due to the fact that they are conveying teenagers that have a dark cloud over there lives. However the way that the teenagers are presented in the skins poster some teenagers even adults might like to dress in that manner which in some cases would be offensive because a person that dresses like that shouldn’t be judged on the way they present or dress their selves.

Analysis of Skins posters

Character Unlike the previous skins poster there is an immediate reaction of anxiety shown on the characters face. Although you cannot see his whole body I believe that the character is naked and seems to be attempting to kill himself. Which straight ways gives us the audience the indication that he is a senseless foolish character however is also springs the question of what has actually pushed him this far to attempt suicide. In the poster we all know what his trying to do but there is a sign of composer in his eyes as if to say that its time and that his given up on life itself.

Settings In this skins poster the location of it is a filthy dirty bathroom this also might have been used to express the type of life style this character might have been living. In that type of environment you could almost tell that a troubled environment leads to a troubled life and as you can see the character must have been troubled tremendously. The bathroom looks like its owned by a family that is dirty and don’t really care about what’s going on around them its unclean rotten and supports the theory that this character is lost dirty and has no one around him that can guide him.

Interior designsThe layout of this poster is well presented I believe it shows so much meaning and promise to the image. Things like the walls being cracked and a water leak from the wall tells the whole story and strings that sense of disgust. By doing this conveys the character as a grimy filthy child however if the viewers look deeply it could also be a call foe knowing that there is no one around him that can support him and there’s no one to run too.

Colour The colour used in this poster is doll and ashy this was used to create an eerie mood the atmosphere is also created by the colour and the colour brings a ghostly scary type of atmosphere. Using that type of mood and atmosphere sends a message of fear and worry.

Lighting In my opinion I believe the lighting is artificial I thing this because if you look closely you can see many different light strips and I don’t thing in a bath room there would have more then two lights. I think that is also high key lighting because the image is rather bright there is no specific direction the lights draws us to however is it very clearly shown above the character I know this due to the fact there is a tease shadow of an object floating in the water. The light also brings an atmosphere of worry and anxiety the character is shown near enough dead and ghostly all this type of lighting is used to bring that sense of trouble and fear to the poster.

ConclusionTeenagers in this poster are represented as being very senseless but however very emotional. I believe it is a realistic portrayal because in the modern day some teenagers can be seen as hated outcasts of a school or even community and they begin to feel very isolated and have no one to turn to. This poster is very believable cause I know myself that if ones not cared for or treated in the right way some teens may think that their better off not alive religion could also go into this if a teen don’t have anyone to go to they would rather be closer to God and in order to do that is to die. I believe that it is a negative representation of teens because the majority of teens would never have such a idea in their mind and this poster is only pointing at a small number of teens.

There would be many responses on this poster some of the audience would think it’s a bit too dramatic others would see into it and believe if things are going on like this now a days their needs to be a stop to it immediately.

I don’t believe that anyone would find this image offensive.
